Description

The most dangerous and exciting car race in the universe is held only once every five years. And that's tonight. The competitors are lined up at the starting block. In his vehicle, JP, the most daredevil driver on the circuit, is ready for the green light. Female driver Sonoshee, with whom he is secretly in love, is also on the starting line. She will stop at nothing to get on to that podium. In this race, not only is anything possible, but also anything is allowed. The film is produced by the studio MADHOUSE (Ninja Scroll, Summer Wars), directed by Takeshi Koike (The Animatrix's "World Record") and written by Katsuhito Ishii (Piroppo, Trava).

Crazy over the top sci fi racer that pushes everything to the limit.

The visual style of the anime. Wow, impressive to say the least, 100% hand drawn and it shows, with such a unique visual style for an anime if it doesn't catch your eye then something is wrong. The smooth animation coupled with gorgeous character and scenery designs leaves people in awe. The exaggerated lines and perspectives coupled with non traditional animation and style by MADHOUSE really is a pleasure to look at.

Characters. One wants to say basic characters but at the same time the attention to detail on each character is impressive for a movie. The mannerisms, the way the characters are presented, colour scheme and just how they feel over all is very polished and clean. All the racers and characters are intruging and don't feel added, keeps interest and all unique, the fact that there are some aliens, wierd Japanese people and some gorillas, makes for an interesting watch.

JP being the essentially the main character comes off as easy going and almost bad-boyish at a glance is a very relaxed character a lot of the time trying to play it cool.

Sonoshee on the other hand is reserved quieter character, who first interacts with JP through a race initially. But with a soft look to her expressions, her alluring personality and mannerisms with green and pink hair, makes her into quite a head turner.

Something that makes a huge part of any anime for me is the soundtrack and Redline's soundtrack is crazy amazing. Just so full of energy and pumping from start to finish, and timing it with specific events leaves goosebumps on anyone watching this movie with a decent sound system. With an OST of 42 tracks, the mood throughout the movie is set spot on.

Plot and developement. Within context, is actually phenomenal. For a racing anime that even though it is sci fi does crazy stuff one wouldn't expect. It is difficult to explain the plot without ruining anything so that'll just remain a surprise, the anime starts off with a race to introduce some characters and a solid foundation for the anime just to smoothly stream line along.

And finally the DUB/SUB is up to discussion, obviously many people are pro or anti dub. For Redline though in particular I was very keen to watch the dub after watching the initial race in Japanese, purely because there is so much going on and so many small details it's not worth missing to experience the original audio. Sonoshee being in my opinion the most well cast character, performs very well. JP is also very good but is quite different from the Japanese counter part but the actor I felt made the anime very much his own. Overall the Dub was very good with each and every character feeling right in place.

Animation = A +
Soundtrack = A +
Plot = A +
Characters = A +
Dub/Sub = A +

And just some personal notes now.

My positive note would be that the soundtrack, the action, everything, was superb, never a dull moment and just a great movie, it's honestly a 10 out of 10 anime.

And my negative note would be in all honesty, that this movie is not in theatres, it's such a great movie there was never a single moment when I felt bored, or questioned something in the anime. Such, a great watch.
