Alone in the Dark is the latest chapter of the franchise that gave birth to the modern survival horror gaming genre. Alone in the Dark will deliver an edge-of-the-seat survival experience facilitated by state-of-the-art real-time physics and unparalleled environmental interaction within a meticulously detailed, open game world.
I did not finish this game, so my review might be incomplete!!
Got my Xbox360 last year, so I have been playing catch up with all the exclusives!
Got Alone in the Dark Collector’s Edition at a great price from AWX.
Great Collector’s Edition! OST, hard cover art book (I got SO many art books now), making of dvd & a nice little figure.
Now I knew going in this game was going to be not so great! But from the reviews I watched on You Tube, it looked like fun!
If I could go back in time
WHERE do I start???
I God awful camera! Don’t they play test these games before they go out?????? Seriously!!!!
Voice acting was horrible! The script for this game was so bad & the story did not help any!
The graphics where actually not bad, the fire effects looked good!! You can watch the wood doors burn down in front of you!!
The car handling was like driving a soap box! The cars actually get stuck on scenery & sometimes you got to restart at your last check point!!
The combat was frustrating!! Enemies can only be killed with fire, no fire equals problem!
Normally there is a fire in the area, problem is you are left running around looking for something that can burn! The you have to use the right analog stick to swing the flaming object like a drunk monkey! & when the enemies burn, they just...poof...
In the museum level there where swords, but they don’t burn so...useless!
You do have a gun, but its more for puzzles, blowing locks off doors & killing those rat/bugs things! You can pour alcohol on the bullets & make fire bullets, because...why the hell not?
The real time inventory system, takes a long time to get used to! Finding different combinations of things to combine is cool!
Combine a rag with a bottle of alcohol & double sided tape! Throw it on one of those rat/bugs things & watch it run back to its nest, BOOM!!!!
Bug spray & a lighter, mini flame thrower!!
I had a problem with the health system! You get sprays, go into first person & select the visible injuries on your body! & spray them to heal them! But if you are critical, a timer appears in the bottom left of the screen & you have about six minutes to find bandages! If you don’t have already, & stop the bleeding! You actually leave a trail of blood everywhere, when in this state!
Problem is, sometimes you get hit by the enemies & go straight past the critical point & die. Even though you have like ten bandages, you can only use them in the critical state!
The AI was not half bad! But running around with a flaming chair, trying to burn them is lame!
There are some REALLY cool ideas in this game though!
Like I said before, combining stuff to get different combinations!
You need to unlock a security door in the museum, but you need a hand print! The guard is already dead, but his body is trapped under some rubble! His arm though, is lying nicely on top of a slab of concrete! Grab a nearby 1000 year old sword & use the right stick to swing that sucker & chop his arm off!
Hot wiring cars, if you don’t find a key in the visor! Is fun, the first time! There are different wires that you have to go through, until the car starts! Lights...no, horn...no, engine...yes!!
Make a Molotov, throw it into the air & shot it in slow-mo as it hits the enemy!
Using a fire extinguisher & the right stick to ram it into a door, to break it down!
You can go into first person mode at any time (which is a lot with this crappy camera) & blink your eyes to get rid of blood & another stuff that gets into your eyes!
A lot of really good ideas!
You have a flash light as well! Sometimes you will come across this dark ooze, the light keeps it at bay!
This game has a lot in common with Alan Wake! Just Alan Wake does everything better!!!
Kill monsters with fire, kill monsters with light! Both have driving sections & the games are done in an episode form!
Alan Wake was supposed to come out around the same time as Alone in the Dark. But got delayed, now I think I know why!
Those guys saw what a mess Alone in the Dark was & said , no we don’t want our game to end up like this! We need more time!
Like I said I never finished this game! I got to episode 7 out of 8 & said enough is enough!
You got to build up your spectral vision, to progress further. To do this, you have to go destroy these Roots of Evil. They are marked on the map, but there are nine of them. This is the point where you can now use the “open world map” ! But to drive all over the map with those crappy cars, no thanks!
& THEN I see in episode 8, you got to do it AGAIN!!! With DOUBLE the amount of Roots!!! HELLS NO!!!!
I see they did a port to PS3, but from the reviews I watched, they only fixed the camera!
If I had to sum up this review, get Alan Wake! NOT Alone in the Dark, cause it’s a God dammed nightmare to play!!!!
